DNA and Genealogy

Genetic Genealoogy:  this has been a very exciting addition to paper trail Genealogy.  My dear sister spent over 35 years digging around in Court House records to flesh out our basic family Pedigree on our maternal side.  Our Paternal side is only becoming clear as we add in new "cousins" using atDNA and mtDNA data.

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogical_DNA_test#Autosomal_DNA_.28atDNA.29

from the Wikipedia site on DNA testing this explanation:
"There are three types of genealogical DNA tests, autosomal (atDNA), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and Y-Chromosome (Y-DNA). Autosomal tests for all ancestry. Y-DNA tests a male along his direct paternal line. mtDNA tests a man or woman along their direct maternal line."

We started out with what was available to us as women - mtDNA.  With a lot of emails and searching we have built a good size database of matches. Most are beyond 4th cousin but still very interesting.  Now with Ancestry's atDNA testing, I hope we will find even more "deep roots".

And my work collegues wondered what in the world I would do with my time when I retired!!!!
