After the long dreary snowy winter, the sun is shining so bright I am looking for my sunglasses that I have not used since leaving America in August 2009! However, the wind is still cold. I believe the long johns must stay a part of daily attire for a bit longer.
Spent yesterday afteroon over coffee with a good friend at the Communications Museum on the Main River. Frankfurt has a km or so of museums all housed in old huge villas strung along the Sachsenhausen side of the river. One could spend days just on the Museumstufer (the street running along the river) going from one to the next. Most all of them have a small cafe for sipping coffee or tea in my English friends case, as well as savoring a piece of German cake. Yumm and I wonder why I have gained 3 kilos!
Frankfurt Altstadt (the old part of the city) was bombed almost totally to oblivion in March 1945, when the Allies concentrated on big cities hoping to bring down the Nazi government. The consequence of it all, was that most of Germany's oldest cities were reconstructed in part to look like the destroyed medievel one. The waterfront area of Frankfurt as you find in most European cities on a river, is the oldest part. The Roemer, where all the Holy Roman Emporers were elected is located in the big square known as the Roemerberg and is only 100 ms or so from the water front.
We live a 10 minute trolley ride from the Roemerberg and the Main river. A sunny day will prompt me to take the trolley to the Roemer stop. After passing through the square, I cross the river on the Eiserner Steg, (an iron pedestrian bridge) which brings me to the the Museum area and just chose one to visit. Another option is to sit on one of the rows of benches at the riverside , watching the endless groups of tourists strolling the path, videoing everything in sight!. To make it interesting, they are mixed in with the local young joggers, skateboarders, old couples with the man carrying his wife's purse, bikers whipping in and round the strollers, and young mothers pushing prams engaged in deep conversations. Ahh the European life style is wonderful.
A bit of daydreaming as I look at our forecast of snow flurries for Saturday!
