The old East and National Parks

Hainich Naturpark is one of the good things that came out of East Germany.  Hainich is part of the 870 sq km Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal park, a " no man's land" from DDR times.  After 1989, a fantastic park along the old border near Eisenach was created.  The result is a wonderful mixed forest of hardwoods and NO towns, only walking paths.  The trails are beautiful and lonesome.  Only 2.5 hours from Frankfurt, we opted for a 3 days short holiday in the park, after Juergen and I returned from our separate trips in August.

Besides the lonely forests, a new type of attraction has been created called a Baumkronenpfad (tree tops nature walk).  We stopped by on our last day and I was gob smacked as Sis would say.  The metal walkway leads you gradually upward through the mature forest with information landings on the wildlfe habit at each level.  Once above the tree tops, you climb a tall tower to bring you 40 meters (about 120 ft) over the forest floor.

The day was crystal clear and we could see forever!

Another natural event is that wildlife, long gone from Germany, such as the brown bear and wolves are moving across the borders from Poland and Czech.  None sighted by us on this trip, but who knows we will see ten years from now!

We had a spectacular, price worth trip and look forward to our move in maybe 6 years to the Thueringer Forest which will put us "smack dab" in the middle of this wonderland
