last days of 2010

As the year draws to a close, I had better make one last effort to post something interesting.  My old buddy Keith checks up on me periodically and I would hate to waste his time!

our little hotel
We spent 5 days in the Thueringerwald at the first of Advent.  We always go to where we are sure we will have snow, but even we were shocked at a meter on the ground and snow falling everyday!  The area is rather high for that region and as we left snow in Frankfurt where it is a rarity before Feb, I don't know why we were surprised.  The air was fresh and cold, -12 to -15C most everyday, but our room was snug warm and we had the clothes for it.

Juergen climbed somewhere everyday whilst I  met him for lunch at mid day.  Or we took a car trip somewhere in the afternoon. Hurray for fantastic winter tires... they go everywhere!

ewige Eis! Eternal Ice, J's favorite expression
The scenery really looked like this!  Mostly the cross country skiers had the trail to themselves but there is always room for a hiker!
my one climb - 1 km to the top of the Schneekopf
After lunch one day, we drove to the highest peak in the area and parked 1 km below the top.  My foot was still not strong, and believe me, this was a real struggle, no matter how pretty it looks.  100 meters out and in the fog, the restaurant looked as if it were closed.  The words I uttered I will not repeat here!

our favorite Cafe really looked like this!
I really fell in love with this small village of only 2000 folks.  Do you think we could be happy there? One more visit in the summer time will prove it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody!
